Johannesburg: Coach Pitso Mosimane and his team have yet again proved to their supporters they can win the 2017/2018 league title, the Pretoria based club has demonstrated its speed and ability last night when they beat Golden Arrows by 1-0 through a penalty kick.
It may look like the log leaders Mamelodi Sundowns needed the three points from the game played against Golden Arrows, the much-needed goal was scored on the 24th minutes through Ricardo Nascimento when the referee awarded a penalty after Sibusiso Vilakazi was brought down.
The Brazilians as they are effectively known didn’t dominate Arrows as expected as the team “parked the bus” the term used by coaches when opposition teams sit back and absorb the pressure .Sundowns didn’t try harder to break the Arrows resolute defense that only gave in just once when left back Zolani Nkombelo brought down Sibusiso Vilakazi in the box leaving referee Khulusande Qongqo no choice but to point to the penalty spot.
Sundowns played like they were in training session, given the ball possession they enjoyed, but their transition and occasional threat on goal never helped them increased their goal. Percy Tau, their leading goal scorer with 11 so far this season, was again full of energy and ideas, combining well with Vilakazi upfront as well as midfielder Gaston Sirino.
But Visitors Arrows stayed compact and looked to catch the home side on the break, but could even have a penalty awarded following a foul on substitute Knox Mutizwa with 10 minutes left on the clock. The Brazilians win over Arrows pushed them six points ahead of second place Orlando Pirates with three games remaining.
This means now that Mosimane and his men just need one more victory to be confirmed as championed for the eighth time in the Premier League era and that win could be next Wednesday when they face Maritzburg United on away game at the Harry Gwala stadium.
