Fraud and corruption case are off the hook

Gauteng– Former acting police commissioner Khomotso Phahlane, his wife and another suspect in a fraud and corruption case are off the hook. Khomotso Phahlane’s attorney has accused the State of orchestrating a show trial against his client for the benefit of the media. He said that the arrests of his clients at the first court appearance was a publicity stunt and there appears to be no real intention to proceed with a prosecution. Khomotso Phahlane and his wife had faced corruption charges for allegedly accepting bribes in return for favours. It is understood the government withdrew the case after its application for a further postponement was dismissed.

Khomotso Phahlane, his wife Beauty and businessman Durand Snyman were each granted R10, 000 bail. Khomotso and Beauty Phahlane face corruption charges for allegedly accepting bribes amounting to R900, 000 in return for favours. The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) alleged that Snyman gave the Phahlanes cars paid for by police contractor, Keith Keating. The vehicles include a Nissan Navara, a Toyota Hilux 3.0, a VW Polo and a Ford Ranger, a Land Rover Discovery 4 a Mercedes-Benz C250. It was also alleged that Keating received police contracts worth billions of rands dating as far back as 2010. Moses Dlamini (IPID) said he will comment on the development after being briefed by investigators.
