Gauteng – It appeared that the Gauteng provincial government is diverting money from its departments to pay the R160 million due to families of the Life Esidimeni victims. The Democratic Alliance (DA) said on Sunday although it is an assistance that the money has been found to pay the financial compensation for the Life Esidimeni(psychiatric) victims, it is unlucky that it has been diverted from funds needed for service delivery. Retired deputy chief justice Dikgang Moseneke ordered that 135 families be paid out by 19 June.
Democratic Alliance (DA) Gauteng MPL Jack Bloom said: “The funds to pay the R160.64 million arbitration award to 135 families of Life Esidimeni (psychiatric) patients who suffered and died will come equitably from all provincial government departments”. MPL Jack Bloom said they are due financial compensation. “I’m relieved that the money has been found because it’s a necessary financial redress to the victims of this terrible tragedy, but unfortunately it’s going to come out of service delivery funds. It’s a price that has to be paid for the arrogance and negligence of this provincial government, unfortunately.”
