Cape Town: Martziburg United are mourning the sudden passing of Luyanda Ntshangase who died on Friday, two months after being struck by lightning during a friendly match.
The promising 21-year-old had been in an induced coma since March 1 incident and the club he had succumbed to his injuries.
The club “we are extremely sad about the loss of Luyanda, an exciting young player with enormous potential”Maritzburg chairperson Farook Kadodia said in a statement.
Ntahangase, who made his debut against Kaizer Chiefs in October 2016, is the third Maritzburg player to perish in a little more than two years after midfielders Mondli Cele, 27 and Mlondi Dlamini, 20, died in a separate car accident.
Mritzburg United is currently fourth in the Absa Premiership league.
Last month the club defeated Mamelodi Sundowns to qualify for Nedbank final against Free State Stars on 19 May in Cape Town.
The funeral and memorial services have not yet been communicated by the club and the family.
