Bus Drivers Embark On NationWide Strike Over Salary Increment

Thousands of commuters were left stranded after several bus drivers embark on a nationwide strike over wage increment on Wednesday.

The South African Transport and Allied Workers Union (Satawu) says that the strike is expected to intensify with more drivers expected to join the industrial action.

According to reports, workers are demanding a 12% salary increase while employers are offering 7%a.

Satawu’s Solomon Mahlangu says: “This is the first day it’s starting and the momentum will build as the day goes. So, we expect the strike to be very strong as we’re trying by all means to intensify the strike,” says Mahlangu.

The Unions is expected to go back to the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration to try resolving the dispute on Thursday.

Bus companies affected include Megabus; Gautrain buses; Greyhound; Golden Arrow; MyCiti; Rea Vaya; Buscor; Bojanala; Algoa Bus; Mayibuye; Go George; Areyeng; Mgqibelo; Lowveld Bus Company; PAL Bus; and Mphakathi.
